Connect in a casual atmosphere to learn more about collaborative decolonization in Ontario archaeology with Emily Anson!

Emily has been working in archaeology since 2011. After over a decade in the field witnessing the inequities and hardships faced by her Indigenous colleagues, she returned to school to begin PhD research with Dr. Dawn Martin-Hill. Before beginning courses, Emily began work with Dr. Martin-Hill on her Ohneganos project (pronounced Oh-nay-gan-oss), a multidisciplinary knowledge co-creation initiative centering around Haudenosaunee territory along the Grand River. Emily's role in this project thus far has been to supply archaeological data to a collaborative map of the Grand River, as well as interviewing elders and recording their stories and traditional knowledge to make into living digital archives. Emily recently joined the repatriation/rematriation committee at McMaster University which will endeavour to return ancestors in the school collection to their home communities. These projects all will contribute to Emily's research on decolonial collaborative efforts in archaeology in Ontario, with the end goal of repatriating the discipline of archaeology itself to the descendant communities it has traditionally studied. In her talk at the APA, Emily will discuss the methodologies and potential outcomes of this research, and its impact on Ontario archaeology.

Learn new things, share knowledge with each other, obtain advice and perspective to help you delve deeper into your understanding of collaborative efforts to decolonize archaeology in Ontario.

Emily Anson, the successful recipient of APA's Student Bursary in the spring of 2023, is providing this session.
