The Association of Professional Archaeologists

seeks to integrate the concerns of archaeologists in Ontario from all avenues of employment including: administration, conservation, curation, consulting, education, research, and teaching and also seeks to ensure that issues and practices affecting archaeological resources are conducted within a commonly recognized set of standards.

We encourage all archaeologists (students, professionals, and teachers) to become a member of the APA.

Our Mission

Specifically the objectives of the APA are to:

  1. encourage professionalism in archaeology
  2. represent the profession in areas of concern
  3. mediate solutions to problems involving archaeological resources
  4. recognize significant accomplishments in archaeology
  5. encourage cooperation in and beyond the profession of archaeology

Organization Profile

The APA is governed by an elected Executive Board consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Four Directors (including Membership and Grievance), Newsletter Editor. There are three membership levels: Professional, Associate, and Student (see the MEMBERSHIP page).

What the APA Can Do For You

News, Information and Representation

In addition to publishing a newsletter which keeps the membership informed of recent developments affecting the practice of archaeology in Ontario, the Association represents its membership on an ongoing basis with government and other agencies concerned with archaeological issues.

Lectures & Workshops

For the benefit of its members the Association sponsors lectures and workshops on various topics. The Lithics Workshop, held in Brantford Ontario in February of 2001, hosted by Dan Long and Donna Morrison was a highly successful training workshop. Other lectures and seminars seek to improve the knowledge and training of members. In February 2008, a lecture entitled "Protecting Yourself and Your Business: A Legal Contract Workshop" was offered. Our members are encouraged to participate in the activities of the Association and to suggest ways in which we can improve our service to archaeology.

Web Site

The association hosts a 'Members-Only' section on this web site. The content under the web site menu items: Web Site Tools, Latest News, Professional Development, Products, Other Links of Interest, Downloads, Job/Bid Postings, Guidelines is only available to APA members. The APA also posts news from municipalities and government regarding archaeological issues. These items can be found under the Latest News menu item. If you are a consultant looking for employees, check out the job bids/postings. If you are a professor or student and wish to post your C.V./resume, and you are an APA member, send in your resume in PDF format and we will post it for you under the Jobs/Bid Postings section of the web site. APA members can consult the list for potential employees.

Important Information

July 2009 - NEW

The APA is pleased to announce that we have added a new membership category to our organization - Field Director member. This membership recognizes the importance of licenced Field Directors to our profession. Criteria are as follows:

1. Valid Ontario R licence for the initial application.

2. Required to have a CV (Stage 1/2, Stage 3 or Stage 4 or research report).

3. $50 yearly membership for 3 years for $130.

Field Director members will be voting professional members but may sit on the Executive only after achieving full professional status with a P licence. A field director member will be appointed as liaison to the APA Executive. Please apply on-line or send your application to the Membership Director, Nick Gromoff.
