This workshop provides an overview of the technological and stylistic attributes that are useful in identifying the time period and function of ceramics and of glass containers.  We'll consider how characteristics related to manufacturing techniques changed rapidly in the 19th century and early 20th century as manufacturers switched from hand production to industrial and mechanized processes.  Using numerous hands-on examples, we focus on identifying the changes that are most useful for dating artifacts to the early, middle, and late 19th century, as well as distinguishing them from 20th century material.
